IF ONLY

“If only” ve “I wish” yapıları aynı anlamı vermektedir. “If only” biraz daha üzücü eylemleri ve olayları anlatırken kullanılır.

 Gerçek durum:  I am not rich[a1] .

                            If only I were rich.= I wish I were rich[a2] 

Gerçek durum:  I didn’t go by taxi[a3] .

                            If only I had gone by taxi = I wish I had gone by taxi[a4] 

 v       If only she could see her famous son now[a5] 

 v       If only I knew her name[a6] . 
v       If only he’d remembered to send that letter[a7] .

“if only” if Clause yapıları gibi kullanılabilir. “I wish” yapısı bu şekilde kullanılamaz.

 v       My diet would be fine if only I didn't have this weakness for sweet things[a8] 
v       If only I had known the truth, I would have told you.[a9] 

“if only” yapısında “only” kelimesinin yeri değişebilir:

 v       If she could only channel all that energy into something useful[a10] 

 v       If she only stopped nagging at me[a11] .
v       If I were only rich.[a12] 

 v       If I had only taken the taxi. / If I only had taken the taxi.[a13] 

 Not: “If only” ile “Only if” i karıştırmayın:

 Only if “tek şartla”  anlamı verir.

 v       He's welcome to come along, only if he behaves himself
